Martin Basdevant was born in 1973 in Paris, where he currently lives.
Mountains are at the core of his work. He draws and paints up there, comes back, goes back, sometimes for several months. A gaze forms, one that the artist takes away and places on his surroundings in the city.
Martin Basdevant's route is punctuated by side roads.
For three years, he attended the drawing class of the Nicolas Poussin studio (Paris), before studying from 1993 at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Paris-Belleville, undoubtedly the only one to offer teaching in painting and engraving. During a scholarship at the Helsinki University of Technology, he discovered landscape design as a discipline. He moves away from the built environment to take an interest in the extent of the territory.
Parallel to his activity as a landscape gardener, Martin Basdevant does not stop painting and drawing. Since 2004, he divides his time between the two activities, and participates in several exhibitions.
The exhibition "oils & pastels" was the artist's second solo exhibition at Galerie Documents 15. It brought together recent works by the artist, who likes to represent views of his Parisian apartment and the mountain valley where he draws his resources: the Queyras.
Martin Basdevant is represented by Galerie Documents 15 throughout the year.
